GM 6.2L Engine Recall – Major Setback for Silverado and Other Models

General Motors (GM) has issued the GM 6.2L Engine Recall, significant recall affecting approximately 877,000 vehicles equipped with the 6.2-liter L87 V8 engine, including popular models like the Chevrolet Silverado 1500, GMC Sierra 1500, Chevrolet Tahoe, Chevrolet Suburban, GMC Yukon, and Cadillac Escalade from model years 2019 to 2024. This action follows an investigation by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) after receiving numerous complaints about engine failures.

Understanding the GM 6.2L Engine Recall

The GM 6.2L Engine Recall centers on potential manufacturing defects in the connecting rods and crankshaft of the L87 V8 engines. These defects can lead to engine damage, loss of propulsion, or complete engine failure without warning, posing a significant safety risk.

The NHTSA’s investigation, initiated in January, uncovered 39 complaints detailing engine failures attributed to bearing issues. Such failures can result in engine seizure or catastrophic damage, increasing the likelihood of accidents.

GM’s Response and Measures Taken

In response to the GM 6.2L Engine Recall, GM has implemented a stop-sale order for affected vehicles in dealership inventories. Dealers are instructed to inspect these vehicles for defects. Vehicles that pass inspection will receive an oil change with higher-viscosity 0W-40 Mobil 1 Supercar oil, replacing the standard 0W-20 oil, along with a new oil fill cap and an owner’s manual insert reflecting the change.

For vehicles that fail inspection, GM has not specified the exact remedy but indicates that engine replacement is a likely solution. Owners will be notified and advised on the necessary steps to address the issue.

Impact on Consumers and Dealerships

The GM 6.2L Engine Recall has significant implications for both consumers and dealerships. Owners of affected vehicles may experience inconvenience due to inspections, potential repairs, or engine replacements. Dealerships face challenges managing inventory and addressing customer concerns promptly.

GM has emphasized that the safety and satisfaction of customers are top priorities and is working diligently to resolve the issue.
